Get data with Power Query in Power BI Report Builder (Preview)

With the recent Microsoft Power BI update for Power BI Report Builder (Paginated Report), in which they have enabled the ‘Get data’ feature, using which users can connect to over 100+ data sources such as SQL, SharePoint, Excel etc.

Description: - Earlier, we had very limited data sources options from which we could get the data. With the new “Get Data” experience we have a number of options in data sources to fetch the data. 1. Open the Power BI Report Builder. 2. Go to the  “Home” tab from and select “Data Sources” to get the data from available data sources.

3. Right click “Add data source” and select use a connection embedded in my report, then ‘Build’. Select connection type.

Follow below steps to build your first paginated report using the NEW  ‘Get data’ experience.

1. Open the Power BI Report Builder.

2. Go to the  “Data” tab from and select “Get Data” to get the data from available data sources.

3. Select the data source from the get data preview.

4. You can search for the data source that you want to connect to or click on the   ‘View more’ option for JSON, SharePoint folder, Parquet connector and other data sources.

5. In our case we are importing the data from an offline excel workbook source. So, we need to select the excel workbook in the “Get data’ prompt then click on the upload file (Preview) and then click on browse then select the excel file then click on browse to select the excel file.

6. Browse the location of the excel file and press the “Next” button as highlighted.

7. Choose data and select the table(s) that you want to load and then Select the “Transform data” button. 

8. Once you will press the “Transform data”, then power query editor window will open

9. Press the “Create” button as highlighted.

10. Now we connected with Data Sources and the table is populated as Dataset under Datasets


11. Now you are ready to create attractive Paginated Report with the data from the data source supported via the Get Data experience and Click on the “Run” tab which is highlighted in from the toolbar..  

12. View as shown below Report.
